Yoga & music
Music through yoga

At a general level, you can expect to:

Learn how to play, listen to and understand music better by learning to connect with the underlying fabric and structure of music, no matter what your level of musical ability.

Learn how to connect and maintain connection with your body, breath and mind.

Learn to notice deeply how your experience of music is generated and affected by your body, breath and mind and by the balance between the intuitive, creative, imaginative (right brain) and the rational, logical, evaluating (left brain) forces of the mind.

Specifically

Sessions typically last for two hours and start with a brief explanation of our approach and the fundamentals behind it. This is followed by short exercises where we learn to put these into practice. Some of the practices will be based solely around music, some solely around yoga, and others will combine the two. The practices flow into each other, building a cumulative effect through the session which will end with meditative practices and/or deep relaxation. You can expect a calming and rejuvenating experience leaving you with increased focus and feeling centred.

Group sessions will follow a plan whereas one-to-one coaching can be flexible as we work on issues or areas of particular interest. So whether you are in a general workshop, a programme designed for a specific group or a one-to-one session, you can expect to acquire concrete, practical understanding and confidence about the wonderful way in which the goals of music and yoga work together.

If you are a musician, you can expect to learn specific yoga practices to help manage any tensions and strains resulting from playing your instrument and to manage pre-performance nerves whilst the yoga practices will be suited to your ability.

If you are yoga practitioner, you can expect to learn how an awareness of rhythmic form and flow affects the body, breath and mind to strengthen and deepen your yoga practice. Please note that the aim in these sessions is not to work on the physical forms of asana per se so we do not typically incorporate physically demanding or complex asana.

You will need to wear loose, comfortable clothing. If you have a yoga mat, please bring it with you, otherwise we have a limited number of mats which you can use.
